California Elementary School Teacher Wins a $10,000 Staycation from California Casualty Auto & Home Insurance


San Mateo, CA, December 19, 2022—Kathryn Winn, a California Teachers Association (CTA) member and elementary school teacher at Morningside Elementary in Garden Grove, California, has won California Casualty’s 2022 $10,000 Educator Staycation Giveaway. Winn was one of over 23,000 eligible K-12 public school employees to enter the national contest.

In an all-school outdoor assembly, California Casualty Field Marketing Manager, Jana Charles, announced Kathryn Winn as the Staycation winner. After falling to her knees in excitement. Winn was then presented her $10,000 check by California Casualty AVP Strategic Account Manager, Bianca Odom. CTA President Toby Boyd, Garden Grove Education Association President Bridget Holdermann, Garden Grove Unified School District’s Assistant Superintendent Lisa Swartz, Morningside Elementary Principal Nathan Bellamy, and California Casualty Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Mark Pitchford were also in attendance.

Upon receiving her award Winn said she was, “Shocked. Humbled. It brought me to tears.” The kindergarten teacher has been teaching elementary school in Garden Grove for 25 years. When asked why she chose to become a teacher, she said her passion for the kids, and “What better job than the teaching profession?”

The staff members at Morningside Elementary were also very excited for her when they heard the news. They said, “This could not have went to a more deserving educator, who makes such a difference in the lives of students.”

Accepting her award on the last day of school in 2022, it is sure to be an exciting holiday break for the much-deserved recipient, Winn.

“The whole mission of California Casualty is to serve those in our community, our community heroes who serve others, and so an educator is the perfect example of that,” said California Casualty’s Mark Pitchford.

This California Casualty community impact program was established to thank educators for all that they do. The 2022 Staycation Giveaway was created for educators to focus and treat themselves, after working hard and putting so much of their time and energy into their students, schools, & community.

Although not a requirement to receive the $10,000 award, Winn has been a policyholder with California Casualty since 2017. Saying “California Casualty has taken really good care of me and has been terrific! They provide great insurance.”
