Oregon Teacher Able to Help More Students Read With $2,500 Academic Award
San Mateo, CA, October 5, 2015 … Jennifer Capener identifies with kids who have difficulty learning. As a student who struggled to read, she understands the importance of having the right classroom tools. Now, the first grade teacher in Silverton, Oregon can invest an additional $2,500 towards her students thanks to an Academic Award from California Casualty.
"I couldn't believe it when they called my name, but I am thrilled," she said after a surprise announcement at a recent school assembly. This is Jennifer's first year at Silver Crest Elementary School, although she has been teaching for 13 years.
"One of my students asked why California Casualty would do this for us," said Jennifer. "I told him it's because they believe in education and it is important to them."
The $2,500 Academic Award was created to help educators who often use their own funds to purchase classroom and other instructional material. Jennifer estimates that she spent $500 of her own money this year on her classroom needs.
Jennifer plans to purchase books for the school's reading room so students of all grades and reading levels will have material suited for them. Due to her early challenges, she has a passion for helping kids read.
"California Casualty has a 64 year relationship serving educators and we want to support their dedication to students and their communities," said Sr. Vice President Mike McCormick.
This was the eighth Academic Award given by California Casualty since the program was created in 2012. Jennifer learned about it from the Oregon Education Association.
